PLANS for an exclusive nine-home development in Winterton on Sea, with access road have been given the go-ahead despite heavy opposition.

Members of Great Yarmouth borough council's development control committee approved Badger Buildings plan for the development at Empson's Loke, Winterton.

However, the parish council had strongly opposed the plans because of fears that an access road would be widened, greenery would be removed and that the homes would not fit in with the look of the village.

David Neve, parish council chairman, told the committee no other planning issue had caused so much “consternation and anger” in Winterton and the new homes would “destroy” the rural environment.

Ward councillor George Jermany said the area was part of “the character of the village” and that the homes were “unaffordable” for people in the village.

In support of the application, Labour councillor Mick Castle said: “I can't for the life of me see how we could refuse this. If someone applied for affordable housing in the area villagers would turn that down.”

However, borough councillors approved the homes after they heard the area had been identified as suitable for the dwellings and that road access issues had been addressed in the plans.
