Expansion in James Paget kidney dialysis services

KIDNEY dialysis patients in the Great Yarmouth area will benefit from an expansion of services by 2015/16, most likely to be at the James Paget University Hospital.

The increase is happening across the region thanks to a multi-million-pound investment secured from all 13 Primary Care Trusts through the East of England Specialised Commissioning Group (SCG), and follows on from a public consultation in early 2010.

The proposals for this included the possibility of a new small unit in Beccles or Bungay.

However, the local NHS and public response to this was balanced between expanding existing facilities in Yarmouth.

Patients in the area will also benefit from more investment in home therapies, giving them the opportunity to treat themselves at home with specially-designed equipment where clinically suitable.

Fiona Loud, patient representative, said: “I welcome the fact the SCG was able to talk to people concerned with kidney dialysis, and that many responded to the consultation.

“Their views have been taken into consideration as part of the decision-making.”
