A company that has developed technology to ensure machines start smoothly is poised to double the size of its operations thanks to growing export orders from the oil and gas industries in Iran and Russia.

Yarmouth-based Softstart UK specialises in the starting and control of alternating current (AC) machines of all types and sizes, from cardboard cutters to oil pumps and weapons.

The firm's soft-starter devices mean that AC machines do not use up extra energy when they are switched on, such as dimming lights, and prevents machinery from breaking.

Formed three years ago with two employees, the company, based on the Harfrey's Industrial Estate, now expects to make a £900,000 turnover this financial year compared with only £15,000 in its first year of business.

In 2007/8 it had a turnover of £500,000.

Now, increasing orders from the oil and gas industry in Russia and Iran should see Softstart UK relocating to a new factory on the Ellough Industrial Estate near Beccles next August.

The move will increase the firm's business space from 3,500 sq ft to 7,500 sq ft and

see its workforce rising from 11 to 15.

Managing director Stuart Harvey said the company was well placed to take advantage of the British downturn as other businesses tried to cut the costs of running plant machinery.

He added: “The mood in the company is very positive, and we have had a fantastic year so far.

“In fact, there seems to be no talk of the recession affecting us adversely.

“I think the key to success

is that companies have

to be diverse, as you can see from the success of our exports.”
