A woman is calling for increased funding for the NHS after her 87-year-old mother had to wait eight hours for an ambulance after falling over.

Edna Watkins spent most of January in hospital with pneumonia and a chest infection and had been staying with her daughter Jenny Kennedy in Filby, near Great Yarmouth, to recover when she fell.

Mrs Kennedy, of Ormesby Lane, returned from the school-run to hear her mother calling for help from the bathroom following a fall.

Unable to manoeuvre her from the floor in the small room, Mrs Kennedy called an ambulance at 9.15am - and it arrived at 5.04pm.

Now Mrs Kennedy is calling for increased funding for the NHS.

She said: “I don’t blame the doctors, the nurses, the ambulance staff, I really don’t. Their attention was second to none.

“But it is a sad situation in this country when someone who is 87, who has paid into the National Health Service all their flipping life, has got no cover. She lay on the cold tiled floor and waited for eight hours.

“The government and the whole of the country have got to accept that another couple of bob when you’re earning money could make a hell of a lot of difference to a hell of a lot of people.”

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said they received 104 calls in the Great Yarmouth area on the day Mrs Watkins fell.

He said: “We would like to apologise for any distress caused by the wait. The patient received welfare calls from a clinician and was made aware that there would be a delay in a crew attending owing to demand.

“The crew treated the woman at the scene but she did not need further treatment at hospital.

“Monday, March 5 was a busy day for the service with more than 3,800 calls trust-wide, almost 700 of which were in Norfolk and almost 104 calls in the Great Yarmouth area.”

The East of England Ambulance Service said they received more than 4,000 calls in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area during February.

Mrs Watkins had been staying with her daughter and is from London.
