THERE was Christmas cheer a-plenty with lots of smiling faces and plenty of seasonal fun and on the Magdalen Estate at the Magdalen Community Association's (MCA) St Nicholas Winter Fayre on Saturday .

This European-style festival kicked off with a bright and colourful procession around the Magdalen square, led by St Nicholas (Nick Richardson) in his horse drawn carriage ably assisted by the mischievous Black Patrice (Cllr Pat Page). These were accompanied by the brass and drums of the Eastern Spirit show corps and Samba Magdalena.

The procession left the Cap and Gown at 1pm and proceeded round the Magdalen Square, calling in at Magdalen House residential home to distribute small gifts to the residents before heading back to the Methodist church to open the Fayre.

Event coordinator Mac McCarthy said: “The Fayre itself was well attended and a jolly lively affair with plenty of stalls, games and competitions to keep everyone amused. Live music was provided by King Tut and the Pyrotechnics and guests the Carol Karaoke also proved popular with plenty of volunteers, fuelled no doubt by the winter punch, willing to show off their vocal skills.

“A great day was had by all and the MCA would like to thank everyone who helped with the organisation of the St Nicholas Fayre and the many people who came to support it.”

Mac also gave thanks to the many people and organisations that had supported the event. These included, Jankie D for making the St Nicholas costume, assisted by Anneliese Stoddart, Tanya Docwra for providing the pony and carriage, Samba Magdalena and the Eastern Spirit show corps for the fanfare and processional music. Mark Llewellyn provided the technical equipment and logistic support.

Mac added: “The MCA would also like to thank our sponsors, Awards for All and the staff of Community Connections for their continued support for this and other events. Last but not least the MCA would like to thank its willing volunteers for their continuing help and in particular Alan Ellison for his financial and voluntary support, without which the MCA would be unable to function effectively.”
