FROM a Viking boat display complete with fiery Saxon invaders to the spectacular floral show on the village Pound, Britain in Bloom judges found everything in the pink.

For among more than 200 hanging baskets and 13,500 plants on display, that was the predominant colour chosen by Filby in Bloom organisers to reflect the heritage of the village near Yarmouth as a major raspberry producer.

Filby was yesterday's stop for judges on a two-week tour of Britain that will decide the winners to be announced at the end of next month.

Jim Knight, from Swansea, one of the two judges for Filby's village category, said: “We have been struck by Filby's community spirit. Almost everyone here is involved in activities for the benefit of the community.

“And the floral effect when you come into the village is impressive. In Bloom brings people together and Filby is a good example of what can be achieved.”

Filby, which has about 60 active In Bloom volunteers, won the overall Britain in Bloom title in 2002. The other East Anglian representatives in Britain in Bloom are Hunstanton, in the coastal town category and Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, large town.
