Fire crews tackle blaze in Great Yarmouth town centre

According to Norfolk Fire and Rescue, eight fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, drone, control unit and several support vehicles attended Regent Road, where a fire broke out at Nico's restaurant.

A spokesperson said: "It is a terraced premises, with a business on the ground floor and residential above. We believe the fire source is in the roof area and the fire is under control.

"There are no reports of any injuries. Police and ambulance are also in attendance."

Incident commander Chris Harding-Cook said the fire, which they attended at 1.45pm on Thursday, took over three hours to put out. Crews used an aerial ladder to reach the flames.

The roof of the building remains unstable and a police cordon is still in place.

He said: "What directly caused the fire is unknown at this point, but there's an investigation underway.

"The road was fully open when the fire started. We were alerted to it by passers-by who noticed smoke coming from the roof.

"We quickly closed it off to keep the public away from the scene.

"Police will stay sitting with it for the meantime while we make the area safe and the investigation is completed.

"Luckily nobody was hurt."

An eyewitness said that Regent Road had been evacuated while emergency services dealt with the flames.

"There were a fair few firemen round the back on Roman Place in breathing apparatus," she said. "It seemed like quite a big deal.

"You could hear even more sirens on the way when I was there at around 3pm."
