IT was during a walk, done thousands of times before, that one lifelong Caister local stumbled upon a prize catch that any fisherman would have been proud of.

Strolling down the beach, 79-year-old Ken Williams came across a huge washed-up cod and promptly got to grips with the situation in hand.

Mr Williams' fitness from his many years of cycling came into its own as he scooped up the fish, which he estimates must have weighed 5lbs, and carted it off back home.

“I was the only one down there at the time and I saw it in the distance and it was still alive so I picked it up by the hand.

“I couldn't get home quick enough with it, and I don't think they're catching hardly any fishes on the beach at the moment.”

Benefitting from the find and Mr Williams' kindness, was neighbour Tish Edmonds, who was walking along the alleyway with her daughter Donna by their house on Beach Road at the time.

“I bumped into him - he's such a lovely man - and he said he had something to show us, and there was this great big fish. He didn't even keep it himself, he was kind enough to give it to us to enjoy for a meal.”
