VILLAGE pupils had a tasty addition with their lunches on Monday as they tucked into loaves of bread as part of a centuries old tradition. Pupils of Fleggburgh Primary School were each given the bread during a special assembly to mark Penny Loaf Day by the village's Poor Trust.
VILLAGE pupils had a tasty addition with their lunches on Monday as they tucked into loaves of bread as part of a centuries old tradition. Pupils of Fleggburgh Primary School were each given the bread during a special assembly to mark Penny Loaf Day by the village's Poor Trust.
The ceremony dates back 500 years and symbolises the ancient custom of giving proceeds from the rent of the nearby Penny Loaf field to the poor of the parish. Originally children were given ale on the charity day, which also marks the first day of farmers going back to work after Christmas, but that tradition stopped in 1909.
