Steady rainfall over recent days has prompted five flood alerts to be put in place around Norfolk.

Alerts have been put in place by the Environment Agency for areas around the River Bure, Spixworth Beck and surrounding Becks, the River Wensum from New Costessey to Thorpe Bridge at Norwich, the River Yare at Norwich, from Cringleford to Trowse Newton and the Rivers Tud and Wensum from Fakenham to Costessey, including Wendling Beck.

The majority are expected to remain in place until Saturday morning.

On Friday, police urged drivers to avoid Taverham Lane due to widespread flooding.

The Environment Agency said: “River levels are expected to continue to rise over the next few hours, especially from Taverham to Hellesdon.

“The forecast is for light rain for the rest of the day with a band of rainfall overnight.

“We are expecting river levels to rise and remain high until tomorrow morning. There is the possibility of some minor flooding to low lying land, roads and riverside gardens.”
