FLOOD sirens in Great Yarmouth will be tested this weekend by emergency planners.
The annual exercise, co-ordinated by Norfolk Constabulary, will take place on Saturday, August 9, between 9.30am and 10.30am at more than 50 sites along the Norfolk coastline.
The sound will be a steady note for 30 seconds and then silence for 15 seconds, continuously repeated for 4 minutes and 15 seconds. The test will take place twice in the Yarmouth area to enable additional computer equipment to be checked. If used in real life then it would be a continuous sound with no breaks.
Chris Eldridge, operational planning manager for Norfolk Constabulary, said: “Areas of Norfolk can be at risk of flooding and it is vitally important that we, together with our partners such as Norfolk County Council and the Environment Agency, ensure the flood siren systems are working correctly as part of the existing evacuation options.
“We strongly recommend that people register for the Environment Agency's Floodline Warnings Direct System which provides warnings of flooding direct to peoples homes or whether they are using mobile phones or email.”
