A fly-tipper who dumped furniture, a mirror and other household items in a passageway in Cobholm, Great Yarmouth, has been left with a court bill of £715 following a borough council prosecution
In July, 2017, a Great Yarmouth Borough Council environmental ranger investigated some fly-tipped waste, comprising furniture, a mirror unit, toaster and boxes and bags of waste, which had been dumped in the passageway behind Granville Road.
Among the waste was a letter, which led to the home of Archangelo Monteiro, in nearby Century Road. The Ranger showed him the waste and he admitted it was his waste and had dumped it.
It led to Monteiro pleading guilty at Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court to an offence of fly-tipping. He was fined £400 and told to pay £275 costs plus a £40 victim surcharge.
Cllr Carl Smith, chairman of the council’s environment committee, said: “Great Yarmouth has a zero-tolerance approach to tackling fly-tipping, and as this case proves, the Rangers will actively investigate dumped waste to try to identify the offender and bring a prosecution where there’s enough evidence and where appropriate.
“Fly-tipping pollutes the environment for everyone and is completely unjustifiable. You can easily arrange for bulky waste to be collected from your home by our operational partner, GYB Services Ltd, for a reasonable fee, or you can take it yourself to the Household Recycling Centre at Caister at no extra cost.
“There are also private waste collectors operating in the borough, but please make sure that anyone who takes your waste is first able to show their waste carrier licence from the Environment Agency.”
Anyone who witnesses an environmental crime in the borough or has information that may help to identify an offender should contact the Environmental Rangers and provide as much information as possible, such as the location and time of offence, what occurred, the description or address of the offender(s), and the registration number of any vehicle involved.
