MORE businesses have come forward to support Great Yarmouth's attempt to break the world record for the largest number of people in one place dressed as cartoon character Wally.

Retailer Boots the Chemist has added its support to the world record attempt, which is set to take place in Market Place next Saturday at 3pm and has so far attracted 700 participants.

The Yarmouth branch of the national chain is providing a carrier bag of goodies to be handed out to everyone taking part dressed as the character from the “Where's Wally” children's book series.

The aim is to beat the total set in New York earlier this year of 1,052 and organisers feel confident this can be achieved with room to spare.

The extra support from Boots has meant that organisers, the Great Yarmouth Town Centre Partnership (TCP), will now be able to donate part of the proceeds of the event to charity.

Boots store manager Linda Sedgwick chose Breast Cancer Care as the charity to benefit from the Wally Day event.

She said: “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Boots are keen to support this as one of their chosen charities.”

The TCP will be donating 1 to the charity for every person that participates, which would mean over 1,000 going to Breast Cancer Care if the record attempt is successful.

Town centre manager Jonathan Newman said: “I'm delighted that Boots have come on board to help make this event really special, with each person turning up dressed as the Where's Wally character adding an extra 1 to the charity gives the event some additional purpose, more than just a bit of fun as originally intended.”

Other local businesses and attractions adding special vouchers to the goodie bag for participants in the world record attempt include Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, Books Inside, the Sealife Centre and Yarmouth Museums.

Anyone wishing to take part in the Great Yarmouth “Where's Wally” record attempt must register online at www.gytcp.co.uk/wally, where they can also reserve their “Wally Kit” consisting of a red and white striped T-shirt, bobble hat and black cut-out spectacles. The “Where's Wally” kits are also available directly from Books Inside in Market Gates shopping centre.
