HUNDREDS of protesters from across Britain will descend on Norfolk this morning to stage a go-slow on the A47 as fuel prices rocket.

The convoy has been organised by one man but a text he sent to drivers and hauliers he knew was then forwarded across the country.

Gary Cooper, who runs Gary Cooper Paving in Wymondham, has had more than 1,000 hauliers and drivers saying they will join in from as far away as Scotland and Kent.

He has been in meetings over the weekend with police, who are warn-ing motorists of severe disruption on the Norwich southern bypass, while Norfolk County Council has amended park-and-ride services.

Mr Cooper said soaring fuel prices were killing livelihoods.

“I'm not a political person and I haven't got a political agenda. I'm not a militant but I am doing this for the family, for the common man.”

The convoy will meet from 5.30am onwards at Postwick, parking at the St Andrew's business park, the old A47 at Blofield and the park near Macro. At the western end, meeting points are the Norfolk Showground and in lay-bys on the A47.

It will then move along the inside lane on both sides of the A47 at 8am and continue for about an hour.

Postwick Park-and-Ride will run with an amended outbound route along Thorpe Road/Yarmouth Road rather then the A47. Norwich Union staff who use the outbound bus service to get to work at Broadland Business Park have been advised of the revised pick-up points. The Harford and Thickthorn routes are unaffected but there may be con-gestion at the junctions with the A47.

Costessey Park-and-Ride will avoid the A47, with all buses using the Dereham Road for inbound and outbound services.

Konect Service 9, which picks up hospital staff and visitors to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the University of East Anglia from the Costessey site, will operate via Bawburgh village and the B1108 Watton Road to the hospital during the protest.

All routes will revert to normal as soon as the fuel protest has ended.
