Fundraising efforts have stepped up for 8-year-old Lucas Pontes, from Southtown, who has just 12 months to live.
Messages of support and kind offers of help have poured in for Lucas’ family - mother Christiane, father Carlos and little sister Luana - since they reached out for help to raise £20,000.
The money is so desperately needed so Carlos can stop work, and spend the precious time the family have left together.
It comes after Lucas was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and his family had thought they were in the clear after an intensive bout of treatment.
But then last month they were told the “worst news” - their son has just 12 months to live.
Lucas is still at Addenbroke’s hospital in Cambridge, surrounded by his family.
Christiane said: “He is a little better. But still feeling nauseous and has headaches, so he is not eating or drinking much.”
With around £8000 raised so far, different events have been held across the town as different communities have come together.
At Southtown Primary School, £1000 was raised when close family friend Colin Yallop organised a football tournament.
Mr Yallop said: “At first £500 was going to go to Lucas and £500 to the school, but when the school heard about Lucas’ tumour coming back, they said all the money should be for him.
“We had over 140 people on the day and 120 children taking part.”
Local photographer Esmeralda Borrego offered a photoshoot, the cost of which going to the family.
The Great Yarmouth College student said: “I don’t know the family but I’m a mother, and I’m Portuguese too.
“They’re a good family and honest people so I really want to help.”
At Lichfield Community Centre, more than 30 people turned out for a wine and cheese evening on Saturday. Around £140 was raised through entrance fees and donations, as well as a tombola and games.
Community centre chairwoman Charmaine Lamb said: “People gave and gave and gave. It’s the most people we have ever had at an event.
“The majority of the people were from Lucas’ road, and we’re a very close knit community, so everyone came out to help.”
Neighbour Abbie Kent, 20, was sponsored to give up smoking. She raised £200 which will go to Lucas’ fund.
