GREAT Yarmouth councillors yesterday sent a unanimous plea to the Highways Agency to bring forward a solution to the town's Gapton Hall roundabout bottleneck as quickly as possible.
The county council's area committee learned that the earliest date the agency could fund a £1.1m scheme for new traffic lights that automatically adjust timing to traffic flows was the financial year 2009-10.
Members were critical that the agency's contractors, Atkins, had not factored in potential traffic flows from the outer harbour and schemes put forward by the urban regeneration company 1st East in their computer model.
Labour councilor Trevor Wainwright said: “Late-2009 implementation at the earliest is very disappointing.”
Borough planning officer Peter Warner said while it appeared the lights would improve flow at the roundabout, there remained the question of whether it could cope with traffic from the outer harbour and 1st East's plans.
