Great Yarmouth’s towering gas holder is safe from being knocked down, National Grid have confirmed.
There had been speculation the town’s Victorian gas tower on the Barrack Estate could be demolished following a bid to knock down one in Norwich by National Grid.
When asked about the future of Yarmouth’s tower, Matthew Pearce, operations programme manager at National Grid Property, said: “We own and manage over 300 sites across the UK many of which are former gasworks.
“The site in Great Yarmouth is one of a number of sites which contains a listed gasholder. No gasholder dismantling work is planned for at this site.”
The tower was built in 1886. The frame is composed of 14 cast columns in three sections. It is Grade II listed. In Norwich a 16-sided Victorian gas holder, off Gas Hill and dating back to 1880, and an underground one nearby are earmarked for dismantling by the National Grid.
