In their 50 years of marriage, Joan and Alan Varney have seen their fair share of ups and downs, but celebrating their Golden Anniversary on September 12, the couple said “love and loyalty” kept them together.
They have two daughters and two grandsons who all live close to their house on Albion Road, Great Yarmouth, and Joan, 71 said family has always been the most important thing to her.
“We’re just family-orientated and so dedicated to them all. We had a family party to celebrate the anniversary and lots of different people in the family got to meet up. It was lovely,” she said.
The pair met in a pub where Joan used to play darts, and after bumping into each other several times, they started going out, eventually marrying at St Nicholas Church 50 years ago.
Their daughters Samantha, 46, and Amanda, 43, went on to have one son each, and Joan has fond memories of spending time with her grandsons, particularly travelling to watch the family’s beloved Liverpool FC play.
“We’ve had so much fun with our grandchildren,” she said. “Alan and I used to go on holidays all round England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and we took our eldest grandson Daniel with us sometimes.
“We all look out for each other, you have to.”
And although things haven’t always been easey for the Varney family, who have struggled with health problems, they have always remembered their vows when things got tough.
Alan said: “What we have had to contend with has helped us, it has brought us closer. You have to stick to your vows.”
Joan agreed, and said: “You have to stick at things when it goes wrong, a lot of couples no don’t.
“It gets better. If you think anything of the person, you’ve got to stick at it. In sickness and in health.”
