GOLFERS clubbed together to raise just under 2,000 for the Palliative Care East appeal, which is edging closer to its 1.5m target for a new palliative care centre at the James Paget University Hospital.

Gorleston Golf Club captain Gerry Eagling organised a charity bunker on the Warren Road course and each time a player hit the ball into the sand they had to pay 50p into a collection tin in the clubhouse bar.

More contributions towards the 1,855.89 total came from raffles and golf matches held at the

club.

The appeal reached its 1m target earlier this month courtesy of donations from hundreds of people who had organised fundraising events for the fund, including friends, neighbours, social groups, clubs and societies.

Mr Eagling presented a cheque to appeal co-ordinator Jenny Westgate at the golf club's Valentine's dinner dance.

Forthcoming events in aid of the appeal include:

An Old Lowestoft slide show in memory of Jack Rose at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft on Sunday, March 14, starting at 3pm. Tickets cost 5.

On Saturday, March 20, there will be dining and dancing in 60s style to the band Out of the Ashes at the Ocean Room in Gorleston. There will also be a raffle.

On Saturday, April 10, the Potters Theatre Company will be presenting the Spring Fever charity show at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton.
