GOOD causes in the Magdalen, Shrublands and Elmhurst Court areas of Gorleston have received a share of 10,000 after winning the support of local people.

As part of the Great Yarmouth Participatory Budgeting scheme, community organisations were invited to bid for a share of 10,000.

After receiving a number of bids, a short-list of eighteen was produced for local residents to decide who to vote for.

Votes took place in Magdalen, Shrublands and Elmhurst Court with ballot forms also delivered to homes for those who wanted to vote via the post - with 579 residents in total making their vote count.

The successful projects received their cash awards during a presentation ceremony at Shrublands Youth and Adults Centre opened by Yarmouth Mayor Tony Smith.

The projects are:

600 to Voluntary Norfolk to support the setting up of the Gorleston Community Cinema.

1000 to Great Yarmouth Special Olympians to help train twenty poolside assistants to support disabled swimmers.

1000 to Norfolk Police to assist with a scheme that allows school leavers to train with the Parachute Regiment.

1000 for improvements at Cherry Road Sheltered Housing.

1000 to the Magdalen Memory Club for dementia sufferers.

1000 to Norfolk County Council's youth work team to provide summer activities in the Shrublands area.

800 to set up an activity club for sheltered housing tenants at Rambouillet Close and Seawake Close.

1000 to the Elmhurst Close Residents Association for outdoor play equipment

1000 for the Elmhurst Close Residents Association to provide a youth sports area in Elmhurst Close.

1000 to Parents Panel to take children to Colchester Zoo and the Hippodrome Circus.

1000 for sheltered housing residents to share a projector for film screenings at Cherry Road, Trinity, Ecclestone Close, Crow Hall Green, Charter Close and The Close.

Funding came from the Participatory Budgeting scheme administered by Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

The voting was managed by Mesh, the neighbourhood management board for the Magdalen, Elmhurst Court and Shrublands.

Colleen Walker, Norfolk County Councillor for Magdalen division, said:“This project has allowed money from the Norfolk County Strategic Partnership to go to local projects that residents themselves have decided are worth backing.

“It is pleasing to see that those projects spread across the area and benefit a variety of different age groups.”
