JEWELLERY, ornaments and embroidered cushions are just some of the items being crafted by Gorleston care home residents in aid of Help for Heroes.

The Gables, in Marine Parade, is backing the soldiers’ charity through the sale of items made by various residents, who include 81-year-old Betty Svassand (pictured with her elaborately embroidered cushions).

In addition, the home, which is run by leading East Anglian independent care provider Healthcare Homes, is joining forces with the neighbouring St Edmunds and Clarence House homes to hold a large raffle to increase the fundraising total.

Regional activities coordinator, Sue Campbell-Bannerman, said residents had thoroughly enjoyed making the handicrafts and selling raffle tickets.

She added: “Help for Heroes is a charity that’s close to many of their hearts. They know first-hand what war is like, having lived through the second world war. So they know how brave our servicemen and women are, fighting in places such as Afghanistan.”

Sue said: “Projects like these are invaluable as they get our residents involved in the local community and life outside the home.”
