THE leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council has agreed to hold a public meeting about the state of the car park at Gorleston pier following a public outcry last week.

Stephen Ames believes a meeting is necessary in order to provide people with the facts about the pier car park, which is closed to cars and is in a state of disrepair.

No date has been set for the meeting, but Mercury editor, Anne Edwards, has agreed to be the chair.

The decision came after MP for Great Yarmouth Brandon Lewis was subject to a surprise public meeting at the Gorleston Pier Hotel last week where the public voiced their anger about the dilapidated state of the car park and the impact of the Outer Harbour.

Mr Ames said: “The facts need to be brought out in the open. At the moment there is a tremendous amount of rumour and speculation and its important the residents of Gorleston find out the truth where we can provide it for them.”

A venue has yet to confirmed for the meeting but movements are already being made to secure somewhere in Gorleston.

Meanwhile, MP for Great Yarmouth, Brandon Lewis, said: “People have concerns so it is important that classify some of the details surrounding the pier.

“It is a sensible thing to do and credit must go to the leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Steve Ames, for agreeing to make it happen.

“It will give the people of Gorleston the chance to have their own clear voice and talk to the people who will be able to give them the answers that they need.”
