Gorleston Scout Group looking for new leaders

The Second Gorleston Scout Group are looking to recruit new Beaver leaders as they approach their 50th anniversary next year.
The group has run active and successful Cubs, Scouts and Beaver sections for many years, but unfortunately had to close the latter section early last year as the long term leaders had to leave due to family illness.
The group is keen to relaunch the Beavers and is searching for volunteers to lead the reprised section, which is run for children aged between six and eight.
The group will meet once a week during school term time and leaders will be responsible for organising and facilitating a range of creative and engaging activities for the children to enjoy, such as games and craft activities, while also introducing and instilling the ethos of the scout movement.
John Saddington, group chairman, said the role could be very fulfilling for the right person.
He said: “For people who like to work with young children being a Beaver leader can be very rewarding. We all remember our leaders and teachers.
“As well as getting to know the children, there are good opportunities for leaders to make new friends amongst the parents and within the scout group and in the district.
“The demand is higher than ever, and having a Beaver group helps feed children into the older groups, but there is a national shortage of volunteers.”
The Beaver meetings will be held from 5pm at Saint Mary Magdalene Church Hall and will finish at around 6.15pm.
In addition to the evening meetings, there are occasional outings and possible “sleep overs” which leaders can arrange with support from the scout group and district organisations.
The Scout Association is happy to take on suitable new leaders with no Scouting experience and information, training and support will be available.
If you are interested in becoming a leader at Second Gorleston Scout Group, contact Mr Saddington on 01493 657202 or Jennifer Chetwynd, district commissioner, on 01379 384069.
The group is also happy to arrange a visit to see the Cubs or Scouts in the hall, or to see another group where Beavers are run.
