Problems of parking around a surgery in Gorleston are being tackled by a group which is appealing to motorists to act more considerately and to also consider parking elsewhere.

The Sussex Road Stakeholder Group has been formed after issues surrounding people travelling by car to the Central Healthcare Centre.

After a request from councillors, NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been working with stakeholders and residents to address the issues which people who need to access homes and services are facing.

This includes speeding, inconsiderate parking and drivers who ignore white lines and dropped kerbs, which can cause difficulty for pedestrians and people with disabilities trying to cross the road.

The group is now asking people to park off-street wherever possible, keep dropped kerbs and no parking areas clear to make access easier, use alternative parking in the neighbouring pub car park in Lowestoft Road for £1 a day and use nearby public car parks when visiting the doctor’s surgery and dentist.

Tina Cleveland, from the Sussex Road Stakeholder Group, said: “This is a very difficult issue which we have been working together over the last few months to try and resolve.

“Parking can have a big impact on residents, especially those with disabilities who rely on features such as dropped kerbs to help them to safely negotiate the street.

“We would encourage people to park and walk to the surgery wherever possible, or use the pub nearby which is offering the chance to park for the whole day for a minimal fee of just £1. This will mean the onsite spaces are kept free for those who are less able.

“We hope that if everyone takes a little bit of time to think before they park, we can improve the situation for everyone using Sussex Road.”

Graham Plant, who represents Gorleston St Andrews on Norfolk County Council and is borough council leader, said: “I have worked closely with councillors, residents and the practice to try and find a sustainable solution to the traffic issues on Sussex Road.

“I am dedicating a portion of my highways allowance for road markings and tactile paving at the dropped curbs, hopefully to discourage inconsiderate parking and drop offs.”
