A bid to knock down a seafront building in Great Yarmouth and replace it with 10 flats has been lodged.

A planning application has been submitted concerning a building to the rear of the former Yesterday’s World museum attraction and Gold Rush arcade.

The submission concerning the building in Apsley Road to Great Yarmouth Borough Council has been made by D and G Mavroudis of Marine Parade.

Their plan for the rear of 34 Marine Parade, if approved by the borough council, will see the warehouse-size building demolished and replaced with two blocks of three storey flats. There would be ten flats with two bedrooms and also car parking spaces for six cars.

Planning papers say: “The existing building is a steel framed construction faced with brickwork to Apsley Road. It has had numerous uses over the years including storage and a local area museum, but is now empty and has not been in use for a number of years.”

A previous planning bid for the same building, which is about 537 sq m in size, had included 16 flats in two blocks but planners at the council felt the scheme was an overdevelopment and would overshadow properties.

That scheme was then revised to the current one with planners saying it is much less imposing.

They added: “The design has been thought out to ensure the properties overlap, thereby giving the rear flats an outlook to Apsley Road.”

Each flat is said to be generous in size and if built will come with an open plan kitchen lounge area and a separate shower room.

Yesterday’s World closed in November 2014, with the loss of six jobs.

The museum was described as “one of the best social history museums in the UK” and held more than 150,000 nostalgia exhibits.

They included a working carousel, wax figures created for Madame Tussauds in London, a taxidermy polar bear and items owned by Queen Victoria.

It had opened in June 2007 in a former amusement arcade. Its closure led to auctions of its many exhibits.

Last June a bid to turn another seafront building into homes was approved.

Caesars Bar on Marine Parade, and the two floors above it, are to be converted into 16 flats.
