THE borough of Great Yarmouth and surrounding villages will go to the polls on Thursday in the local elections.

But electors will not just be voting on the third – or 13 – of the 39 borough council seats which are up for grabs, they will also have two other pieces of paper they need to put a cross on, and in some cases two other elections.

A county council by-election has been created by the resignation and subsequent death of Gerry Cook in Lothingland. This has attracted candidates from the two main political parties as well as an Independent and a Green.

Both Labour and Conservatives are represented by two stalwarts in local politics, Trevor Wainwright and Barry Stone, respectively. They are joined in the battle by Green candidate Michael Brackenbury and Independent John Cooper, who was the driving force behind the county council scrutiny into the outer harbour deal.

In the borough’s Nelson ward, former mayor Sue Robinson’s daughter Kerry Payne is standing as the Labour candidate. She is up against Tory Malcolm Bird, former chairman of the Greater Yarmouth Tourist Authority, and the sitting councillor Brenda Taylor – elected for Labour, but de-selected in favour of Mrs Payne earlier this year.

Labour’s Marie Field moves wards from Caister South to stand in the Central and Northgate seat hoping to take over former mayor Trevor Easter’s seat. She is up against Lib Dem Gordon Dean, and young county councillor Tom Garrod.

UKIP are contesting two borough seats in Bradwell South & Hopton, and Claydon, wards.

Referendums will also be taking place on a proposal to introduce the Alternative Vote system to replace the current first past the post system and whether to have an elected mayor for the borough.

Parish council elections will only be taking place in Stokesby. Although parish councils for Belton with Browston, Burgh Castle, Caister north and south, Filby, Fleggburgh, Fritton with St Olaves, Mautby, Ormesby St Michael, Repps and Rollesby, were in line for elections, not enough candidates have stepped forward so those nominated are automatically elected.

In neighbouring Broadland, there will be parish and district council elections for Acle, where 12 parish council seats are up for grabs.

In the North Norfolk District Council area, there is just one parish council election - with 16 candidates chasing 11 seats in Hickling, and three district council elections.
