The Christmas season has arrived in spectacular style in Great Yarmouth tonight.

At 7pm tonight a large crowd saw the festive illuminations burst into life in the town.

The lights were turned on by celebrity chef and Norfolk resident Galton Blackiston, of Morston Hall, and mayor of the borough Kerry Robinson-Payne through the use of a giant plunger and a 15 second count down in front of hundreds of people.

Fireworks then spectacularly sprang into the air from the roof of the Market Gates Shopping Centre as the crowd cheered on.

Before the switch-on the Market Place crowd was entertained by dancers from Centre Stage Theatre School and the Iceni Dance group and singer Gabby Starbuck and music by Beach Radio.

The festive celebrations followed the opening of the three day Great Yarmouth Christmas Fayre and the town’s real ice rink on the Market Place.

The ice rink will run until January 2. To book tickets visit www.great-yarmouth.co.uk/SkateYarmouth or at the onsite ticket office.
