Road improvement work in Great Yarmouth town centre will see The Conge closed at various points through January and March.

The works include new kerbing and widening of the pavements on the northern side, improvements to cycle access, new signing and lining, new crossing points and resurfacing of the carriageway.

Norfolk County Council says the improvements are designed to create a better route between the railway station and Market Place for pedestrians and cyclists, and encourage more visitors and residents to consider travelling to and from the town by train.

The works will be split into multiple stages, with road closures on The Conge applied to each.

During each stage of road closure, access to businesses will be maintained and diversion routes will be signed.

The various stages of works are planned as follows:

The Conge: Length from North Quay junction to George Street junction – January 8 to late January 2018. Road closure in effect, no access from North Quay.

The Conge: Length from George Street junction to Church Plain junction– late January to mid-February. Road closure in effect.

The Conge: Length from Church Plain junction to Market Place junction – mid February to mid-March. Road closure in effect, no through traffic to Market Place. Access to Market Place car park and Fullers Hill via alternate routes to be finalised.

Carriageway resurfacing (including Howard Street North) – throughout March. Various areas of road closure required throughout works area. Diversion routes will be signed for each closure.

The county council says the work is being carried out over the winter months in order to avoid the town’s peak tourist season and therefore minimise the impact on the town.

They are part of a wider scheme to improve the public realm between Great Yarmouth Rail Station and the Market Place and will include improvements to pavements and cycle facilities, crossing points, resurfacing of carriageways and amendments to drainage and lighting. These works are currently in progress and are due to end in March.

Further works will be undertaken to construct a new right-turn lane from Great Yarmouth Station onto Acle New Road, also commencing on January 8.

Works to the forecourt and access road of the rail station itself will also take place in early 2018.

The County Council says it thanks people for their patience while this improvement work is carried out.

The work will be carried out by Norfolk County Council’s Community and Environmental Services Department and their contractors.
