A man was “pounced” on by police after attempting to take a friend to hospital having smoked cannabis and not having a driving licence.

Richie David Pugh, of Southtown Road, Great Yarmouth, pleaded guilty to driving a Vauxhall Mokka while over the legal drug drive limit, as well as driving without insurance or a licence, on June 16.

A member of the public reported Pugh to police, who stopped him on Boundary Road in the town.

James Hartley, defending, said: “He is dyslexic and he does not believe he can pass a theory test, but he knows how to drive.

“He took the keys to the car to take a friend to hospital but unfortunately someone was aware of it and police were there waiting to pounce.”

Pugh, who previously had a provisional licence which has now expired, was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £207 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and court costs of £85.
