The manager of an equestrian centre where a horse suffered leg injuries says it is unclear if the mare was attacked or injured herself.
Martin Vincent, general manager of the Humberstone Farm Equestrian Centre in Great Yarmouth, made his comment after Ellie, a 10-year-old mare, suffered cuts to the backs of the hind legs in a field on Thursday.
She belongs to Daisy Cullen.
In a statement Mr Martin said: “We are very sad to learn of the injury to Daisy’s horse, Ellie.
“Naturally, it’s always distressing to hear of any animal suffering.
“At this stage we don’t know the cause and are looking into this.
“We certainly hope this was not a deliberate attack.
“It is difficult to believe that somebody could do such a cruel thing however, unfortunately, you do hear of it.
“We will obviously do everything we can to support Daisy and try to establish what happened.
“Whilst an attack is possible, we must also consider other ways Ellie could have sustained her injuries.
“Horses are very easily frightened, so it’s not unusual for them to get wounded whilst running or kicking out.
“It would be incredibly dangerous to attack a horse at its back legs.
“They are extremely powerful animals and a kick could easily be fatal.
“Having spoken to the vet today, it appears the injuries aren’t as severe as first thought and the horse seems to be doing well; which is fantastic news.
“We wish Ellie a speedy recovery.”
