The owner of a horse has been left devastated after the backs of its rear legs suffered deep cuts in the field it was in.
Daisy Cullen was shocked to find her 10-year old mare Ellie had suffered the gruesome injuries in her field at Humberstone Farm Equestrian Centre in Great Yarmouth.
Ms Cullen discovered the injuries at about 4pm yesterday and she fears Ellie will be left lame or in the worst circumstance put to sleep.
She also said the police would be investigating the incident to see if a crime was committed.
She said: “The vet has closely inspected this, and the police are coming to investigate this afternoon, as this was not caused by another horse or rug of any sort. We believe that she has been attacked, with a sharp instrument of some sort, as her field unfortunately is quite easy to access by dog walkers and the general public next to the river.
“This may have penetrated her tendons and could leave her lame, or having to be put to sleep.
“I will be devastated if I lose my baby.
“She’ll now have to be on box-rest for the distant future, and I may not be able to ride again, that’s if she is able to fight any infection.
“We’ll find out whether it’s healing or not today when the vet returns to remove the bandages.
“She’s such a happy, lively horse and this would be a devastating end for her after three and a half years of her being in my life.
“I just can’t bear the thought.”
