Three fire engines were called to Wherry Way shortly after 1am yesterday after a fire alarm was activated in the bungalow.

Firefgihters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze within 25 minutes using hose reel jets and a thermal image camera.

One elderly man managed to get out of the property but a second man suffered fatal injuries and died as a result of the fire.

The blaze is not being treated as suspicious and forensic examinations took place yesterday.

The complex, owned by Yarmouth Borough Council, is covered by wardens and in a statement released this afternoon it said staff took immediate action.

A spokeswoman said: “The duty staff member went to meet the fire brigade and on arrival at the property noticed flames from within. Staff are instructed not to enter a burning building; however she managed to persuade one of the occupants to leave the premises. The fire brigade dealt with the incident from that point. Our sympathy goes to friends and relatives of the deceased.”

A post mortem has been conducted and officers are waiting for the results. The victim will not be named until next of kin have been informed.
