A wildlife rescuer has welcomed the sighting of an otter or otters in the Breydon Water area of Great Yarmouth.
Kevin Murphy, who set up Norfolk Wildlife Rescue, said he was pleased to see reports of the semi-aquatic mammals around the River Yare.
He said: “Although nocturnal, otters often venture out in daylight if it feels safe. Lots of folk see this semi-aquatic mustelid whilst walking riverbanks or fishing.
“It is good to know they are in the Great Yarmouth area. I have known of some sightings in the greater Yarmouth area, but sometimes they are mistaken for minks.”
Mr Murphy said the animal, which suffered in numbers as a result of hunting and pesticide in the middle of the 1950s and 1960s, but has seen something of a resurgence in recent decades.
He added: “They are believed to be present in every county in England now and are a fully protected animal.”
