THE search is on for teams to to take part in a fundraising event which celebrates beating cancer, and raises cash to help with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of of the illness.

The 2011 Great Yarmouth Relay for Life is part of Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life, an inspirational overnight event that honours cancer survivors and celebrates life. The Great Yarmouth area event is overnight from 2pm on Saturday, July 23, until 10am on Sunday, July 24, at Caister High School, and teams are being sought to take part.

Since 2008 the Great Yarmouth Relay has raised 100,000 for Cancer Research UK. Chairman of the local event, Jayne King, said the committee was looking to make the 2011 Relay even bigger – beating last year’s total of 44,000.

She said: “We are looking for a minimum of 20 teams to participate this year which we believe will help us pass last years total. Anybody can join in, regardless of age or fitness level, as the idea is each team works together to maintain a relay of walking throughout the 20-hour event. Relay events focus on fun for all and in previous years we have had a mix of teams representing families, societies and local businesses.”

Teams raise money in a variety of ways from pub quizzes and car boot sales, to karaoke nights and variety shows.
