A PROFUSION of plants has transformed the appearance of a previously foliage free community centre in Gorleston.
What was once a bare forecourt at the Manor Close Community Centre is now bedecked in flowers following last week's planting day. Wielding watering cans, trowels and forks over 50 local people joined forces to brighten up the previously dull and grey surroundings.
Local residents from Manor Close and the Halfway House estate were joined by members of the Commoners Youth Club, Air Cadets Squadron 221, Great Yarmouth Community Housing, officers from the Cobholm and Southtown Neighbourhood Policing Team, and the Neighbourhood Management team for the area.
Funds for the project were allocated via the Cobholm, Southtown and Halfway House Neighbourhood Board from the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, with Great Yarmouth and Gorleston in Bloom supplying plants, and mental health charity Mind providing the planting boxes.
Neighbourhood development officer for the Neighbourhood Management programme, Erika Chalkley, said: “Today has been a fantastic success, with so many local residents and voluntary groups getting involved and taking the lead on improving the neighbourhood. This is just the start of our work in the area, and I would really encourage other residents to get in touch with me about their great ideas”
Local people from Cobholm, Southtown and Halfway House also still have the opportunity to apply for grants from a �10,000 funding project, being delivered by the local Neighbourhood Board. Residents and local organisations are eligible to apply for small grants of up to �500, for projects which will benefit their community.
Deadline for applications is Monday and decisions for funds will be made through a public voting session.
