GREAT Yarmouth's St George's Park has scooped the coveted Green Flag Award for a second year.

Groundsmen responsible for keeping the park in ship shape joined with councillors and council officers last Thursday to raise the new flag in the park, a popular hub for families.

St George's Park was first awarded the Green Flag in 2008 - a top notch gong for open spaces - after a 2.5m revamp which saw new pathways, lighting, seating, planting and a nautical themed playground added to the park.

Leader of the borough council Barry Coleman joined with the mayor Tony Smith, councillor Jim Shrimplin, Simon Mutten, the borough council's environmental services manager, Peter Holland ground maintenance manager at GYB Services and park keeper Clifton Hughes for the flag raising ceremony.

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and recognises the best green spaces. Across the country, 1,013 green spaces were given the award, three in Norfolk; St George's Park, Yarmouth, Whitlingham Country Park and Holt Country Park.
