THIEVES have been warned to keep their hands off mobile phones and handbags in Great Yarmouth's pubs and clubs.

South Yarmouth Safer Neighbourhood Team is joining forces with the town's nightspots in an anti-theft campaign.

Beer mats have been produced with a picture of a phone on side and a handbag on the other to remind people to look after their possessions while out on the town.

Posters are also being displayed in venues to warn revellers about mobile phone thefts.

A police spokesman said: “Pubs and clubs can be an ideal location for the opportunist thief to pick up an unattended phone or handbag whilst its owner is talking, purchasing drink or on the dance floor.

“With a little care owners can prevent themselves becoming a victim of crime and having their evening ruined.”

Crime reduction officer Penny Carpenter came up with the idea of producing the beer mats to help reduce thefts in pubs and clubs.

The campaign is being officially launched next week by Glynn Price of the Atlantis nightclub with Mrs Carpenter, Superintendent Jim Smerdon and members of the safer neighbourhood team.
