RESIDENTS in Hemsby are to be asked for their views on the future use of the former Pontin's holiday park site.

The traditional seaside holiday camp closed its doors in January with the loss of 55 jobs.

Now landowners Northern Trust said this week it was considering its options for the site and wanted the views of local people.

Leaflets will shortly be sent to every household in Hemsby asking residents key questions about what they think is needed in the village.

The leaflet marks the start of a consultation process which will also include a public exhibition later in the summer. The exhibition will give people the opportunity to discuss their ideas in detail.

A spokesperson for Northern Trust said: “We are keen to hear the views of local people and hope that as many residents as possible will get involved in the consultation and play a part in deciding the future of this site.”

Earlier this year, Yarmouth Borough Council said it was keen to keep the site in holiday use.

The site was purchased by Sir Fred Pontin in 1971, who soon opened at 1m holiday village which housed 500 guests in self catering chalets on the 80 acre site.

At the time he described his Hemsby camp as being perfect for people who wanted “come as you please holidays”.

Many families would say the 1970s was the heyday for the camp as thousands of people were entertained by Bluecoats and enjoyed regular heatwaves.
