flooding in part of Bradwell will get worse if plans for a new health centre go ahead, a villager fears.

NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney wants to expand Falkland Surgery by building a new eco-friendly health centre on land next to the present surgery in Falkland Way.

Carl Annison's Primrose Way home backs on to the proposed site and he fears his property could be flooded if the development goes ahead. And, while the civil engineer accepts the land will be built on eventually, he does not believe a surgery is appropriate.

He said: “When we get heavy rain the foul sewerage system cannot cope. Manhole covers overflow and flood my garden and next door's too.”

Last month Mr Annison went to view plans at the surgery for the new health centre - which is poised to carry a range of energy-efficient measures such as solar panels and ground source - and said he thought the development looked bulky.

“Don't get me wrong - I'm not against development in the area. But I would rather something else be built there. It seems quite a big development to me,” said the father of three. Mr Annison has written to the surgery detailing his objections to the proposed centre, which could be completed by the end of 2010 if the scheme secures planning consent.

The larger surgery would have a range of services including district nurses, podiatry, physiotherapy and possibly a pharmacy. The project is part of a five-year development programme that would see thousands of pounds being invested in doctors surgeries across the area.

NHS Yarmouth and Waveney spokeswoman Liz Hearnshaw confirmed that plans had been submitted to Yarmouth Borough Council.

Among the bodies consulted about the scheme as part of the planning process will be Anglian Water.
