DO any of the faces in these pictures, taken at Gorleston's Shrublands Community Centre, look familiar?

If so, Mercury readers could play a big part in helping the Shrublands Community Archive Project chart the history of the centre, which opened in June 1949.

The project, supported by the Heritage Lottery fund, aims to create an online record, with photos, of events at the youth and adult centre, which has hosted thousands of activities, including pantomimes and plays as well as meetings of the scouts and guides.

Project co-ordinator Brian Brackley said the campaign, which started in October 2007, had already generated considerable interest with thousands of photos being contributed to the website.

He added the archive group was hoping to find out the names of the people in the photos, the dates they were taken and more information about what activities were taking place.

During the Magdalen Way centre's heyday in the 1970s, between 75,000 and 80,000 people used to walk through it's doors, many to see drama productions, but also to participate in activities organised by the scouts and guides.

In January last year, 250 people attended a reunion day for people who used to use the centre, organised by the project, some having not met for over 30 years.

Mr Brackley said: “Many of the people who used to attend here came along and the atmosphere was unbelievable as some had not met for 30 years. We have had more interest than we ever expected. We are really pleased.”

The project holds weekly workshops at the centre every Friday at 10am. Anyone with information about these photos should phone Mr Brackley on 01493 440932.

More pictures next week.
