Help keep us free of bird mess

SPLATTERINGS of pigeon mess which have got a Great Yarmouth businessman in a flap have been cleaned up.
Last week the Mercury reported on how music showroom owner Cornelius Curtin was becoming frustrated as customers at Allens Music Centre had to step over unsightly white droppings on its doorstep.
Because Mr Curtin claims Yarmouth Borough Council is not regularly clearing up the mess at his Market Gates Shopping Centre showroom and is threatening to withhold a £169 business improvement district levy to the authority.
But it appears Mr Curtin may not have to go ahead with his threat as the area was cleared of mess at the weekend. The deep clean took place after anti-pigeon measures, such as netting and spikes, were installed over Allens during the weekend.
The council said the area would be regularly cleaned.
The deep clean was welcomed by town centre manager Jonathan Newman, who also said people in Yarmouth must take some responsibility for keeping the town free of bird mess.
He said: “We also ask visitors who consume food in the town to share in the responsibility of keeping our town centre clean by using the bins provided, which combined with our work, will dramatically improve the situation for all.”
Tim Howard, head of the borough council’s regeneration and environ-ment office, said the problem of bird mess would always remain – but pledged it would continue to be tackled.
He said: “Unfortunately we do get a build up of mess.
“We do carry out routine cleaning but while the birds are there the same will happen again.
“We do not have any plans to cull any of the birds, but we will continue the cleansing work for the benefit of our residents, businesses and visitors who come to Yarmouth.”
