A SLIDE show about Hemsby during the second world war will be shown at a pub in the village to raise money for a thatched roof.

Andrew Fakes, president of the Great Yarmouth and District Archaeological Society, will be giving the presentation at the Bell in The Street on April 1, starting at 7.30pm.

All proceeds will pay for the work needed to the thatched roof on the Barn Room in The Street, which is set to cost 20,000.

The presentation arose after Hemsby-born Mr Fakes was approached in 2009, by a Hemsby resident, asking what happened in the village between 1939 and 1945. He wrote two pages on the subject, but continued to investigate the period from the written records and from memories of local people.

He now has 20 typewritten pages of A4 and numerous pictures.

Mr Fakes has found details of the six people who were tragically killed within the parish and also of the eight young men from Hemsby serving in the forces, who died and who are recorded on the Parish War Memorial. Photographs of some of these people have been received.

Mr Fakes will also talk about the fixed defences built in Hemsby, the Home Guard, military forces accommodated in the village, aircraft flying overhead, air raids, agriculture, food production and how the war affected the population in general.

However, Mr Fakes has had problems finding information as the only people with memories of Hemsby during the war were very young at the time.
