Visiting a seaside shop can be a bewildering experience for some holiday makers coming from beyond the county’s borders only to hear words they have never come across before.

And even for locals Norfolk’s rich dialect can throw up some conundrums like ‘chelp’, ‘skriggle, and ‘drant’.

And now Seadell Shops in Beach Road, Hemsby, is getting behind Norfolk Day with a fun quiz to see what customers can score out of ten to win a souvenir fridge magnet or key ring.

Stuart Reeve, director, said all the answers would be multiple choice to give the out-of-towners a head start.

“Quite simply as a family we are proud Norfolk people born and bred. Secondly across the road from us is Richardsons and they one of the main sponsors. We have a good bit of banter with people at the till,” he said.

The event is the idea of fellow director Ann Reeve, who is also honorary secretary of the Friends of Norfolk Dialect.

She said: “We unt get in a puckaterry but we got sum buntin’ un flags un we’ll tricolate the shop up un hev a good ol’ time.”

(In Norfolk dialect, ‘chelp’ is insolence, ‘skriggle’ is to squirm and ‘drant’ means to drawl your words)
