MOTORISTS in Great Yarmouth are bracing themselves for weeks of chaos as a major project to reinforce roads around Haven Bridge gets under way tomorrow.

Sections of South Quay, Hall Quay, North Quay and Haven Bridge will undergo a major £1m revamp which will see the roads strengthened in anticipation of the extra traffic the outer harbour is expected to generate.

While transport bosses at Norfolk County Council have divided the works into phases, serious disruption is expected.

Limited traffic flows will be maintained at all times on Haven Bridge during the works but significant disruption is expected during the first three phases of work.

Access to the town for vehicles travelling from Southtown will be particularly difficult during phases two and three. Traffic heading into the town from south of the river will have to use Breydon Bridge via Gapton Hall roundabout. The works will put extra pressure on Fullers Hill roundabout, and transport bosses have urged motorists travelling to avoid the roundabout if possible.

The work, which will take place between 7.30am and 5.30pm, is expected to be finished by November 1. One-way orders will be reversed during the works, meaning traffic will be able to turn right from King Street car park on to Howard Street South and will be able to travel along the road and exit via The Conge. The existing exit from Greyfriars Road will be maintained.

Haven Bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists at all times. Minor works to widen lanes at Hall Quay have already started and work to reinforce part of Southgates Road will begin on November 8 and be carried out over three weekends. Work to lanes around the town hall will be carried out in January because of the reroofing work at the building.
