The Heritage at Risk Programme (HAR) was launched by Historic England and is used to help assess the overall state of the country’s heritage sites.

The programme aims to reduce the number of sites at risk by identifying those in danger of being lost as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development.

The following ten heritage sites in the Great Yarmouth area are listed as being at risk:

• Church of St Peter and St Paul, Church Road, Burgh Castle

The Grade II listed building was offered a Heritage Lottery Fund grant in 2013 and some repairs have since been made. However, structural work still needs to be carried out on the tower and the south aisle roof. The HAR describes its condition as “very bad” and at “immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric”.

• The Minster, Church Plain

Founded in 1101, the building was extensively fire-damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt, but urgent repairs are needed on the central tower and stonework.

• Church of St Peter, Dene Side

The south aisle roof is described as being in “very poor” condition with “urgent masonry repairs” required and currently under way.

• Winter Gardens, Marine Parade

The site recently had a £12m lottery funding bid turned down and the cast iron building is currently unused and eroding.

• Tower on Town Wall, Dene Street

The derelict tower on the medieval town wall, which dates back to 1261, is in urgent need of stonework repairs.

• Church of St Margaret, Fleggburgh

A repair scheme is in progress, using lottery funds, with rooves being rethatched and drainage installed.

• Barn at Hall Farm, Hemsby

The early 14th century timber-framed barn was damaged in a storm but repair works are under way the Grade I listed building.

• Medieval vaults, Howard Street South

The structure is at risk of being lost due to water penetration, condensation and the condition of existing shoring.

• Church of St Mary, Regent Road

A grant was used in 2011 to stabilise the building, but urgent structural and weathering problems are now a concern.

• Church of All Saints, Filby

A visit and assessment in 2012 concluded that the rainwater goods, tower masonry, and chancel roof were in poor condition.
