INTREPID fundraisers will be hoping to help the Palliative Care East Appeal at the James Paget University Hospital reach a new high.

A 50-strong team of women will travel to Scotland on May 6 to climb 4,400ft high Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak, to raise 14,000 for Belton man Tremaine Kent’s Carla’s Angels appeal.

Mr Kent, an ex-elite special forces member, set up the appeal to raise 30,000 for the charity in memory of his partner Carla Saunders, who died of cancer in 2009.

The experienced former soldier has completed The Four Deserts Challenge across some of the driest, hottest, windiest and coldest places on earth, and will be responsible for training the fundraisers to complete their trek.

The team, which includes staff from a PR recruitment company and hospital staff, including student nurses and hairdressers, is being put through its paces by Mr Kent, on Gorleston clifftop.

The money raised will help pay for a garden at the new Palliative Care East centre, which will be built once fundraisers have achieved their goal of raising 1.5m.

The centre will provide supportive and palliative care as well as psychological support services for people with terminal illnesses.

Jenny Watson, Palliative Care East appeal co-ordinator, said: “Everybody’s really up for the challenge. We have been training on Gorleston clifftop. I think it is a new challenge for Tremaine to try to get this group in order.”

She said the group should take seven hours to climb Ben Nevis and four hours to get back down.
