In 2007, 3,693 people needed HIV care in the region, a 12pc increase on 2006.
An estimated 77,400 people were living with HIV in the UK, a six percent increase on 2006.
In response to the Health Protection Agency's latest statistics, the Terrence Higgins Trust in the East said: “There are now well over 20,000 people in the UK who have HIV and don't know it. Not only is this dangerous to their own health, but they are more likely to pass the virus on than someone who has been diagnosed.”
They call for people to recognize the risk and be tested.
