Hopes are high that a bikers' charity event will return to the streets next year after red tape forced this summer's ride to be cancelled.

Earlier this year, the Eastern Lights Cavalcade, which has previously seen bikers ride from Norwich to Lowestoft via Yarmouth, was cancelled because of problems getting cover from Norfolk police.

Now organisers have said they are hopeful that the charity event will return on July 25 next year with the support of Suffolk police and take place in Suffolk.

A rally weekend at the end of July still saw about 1,500 bikers descend on Lowestoft in support of the cancelled cavalcade and more than 9,000 was still raised for the James Paget University in Hospital in Gorleston because most of the participants donated their fees from the cancelled trip.

This week, organisers presented a cheque for 9,080 to the hospital's accident and emergency unit.

Eastern Lights committee spokesman Paul Howard said: “We cannot change what has happened this year, but we can look forward to next year, and I can announce that we have fixed a date for an event on Sunday July 25.

“We do not as yet know what form the event will take - but it will take place in Suffolk and a meeting with Suffolk Police is planned for the near future.”
