A flood prevention scheme that hopes to prevent torrents of sewage rising through a coastal village is nearing its completion.

Anglian Water says its £3m engineering upgrade work at Bradwell and Belton should reduce the risk of flooding by reducing the amount of used water going through Bradwell’s Morton Crescent Pumping Station.

Residents of Bradwell are only too aware there have been decades of problems linked to the village’s drainage system causing sewage to pour out into roads.

MORE; hopes flooding will stopThe worst affected roads are Lords Lane and Yew Tree Close, and Stepshort in Belton has also been affected in the past.

The improvement work, which also features a new pumping station at Stepshort, was due to be completed last summer, and due to the delay the company sponsored Bradwell’s community fete.

Bradwell borough councillor Carl Annison had taken Anglian Water to task following heavy flooding in 2016.

MORE; village waits for sewer upgradeHe said: “It’s great news the £3m upgrade nears final completion as 50 years of historical sewage flooding in the village I represent could now be over

“I personally thank all colleagues, the borough council, Anglian Water and everyone who has driven this project to be delivered.

“I will be watching every single time it rains hard to see if it all works, and if it doesn’t I will be straight on the case.”

Holly Goodchild, a spokeswoman for Anglian Water, said: “We are delighted the £3m upgrade work in Belton and Bradwell is near completion.

“This significant engineering scheme should help reduce the risk of flooding in the area by reducing the amount of used water passing through the Morton Crescent Pumping Station.

“Alongside the new sewer, a large underground storage facility is being installed to better manage the flows, particularly in times of extreme rainfall.

“The work has taken longer than expected to complete and in recognition of this we sponsored the Bradwell community fete as a token of our thanks to the community for their support and patience.

“We are pleased to see this area hasn’t flooded since we began the work there and we hope to continue to see the benefits of this investment for years to come.”
