The oldest resident of Reedham celebrated her 100th birthday with a family party.

Mrs May Mutton marked her special birthday on April 1 in Oxfordshire with her son and his family.

Born in Southwood, near Freethorpe, May is the youngest of five siblings and was educated at Freethorpe village school. On leaving formal education at the age of 14 she went to work as a nanny at the children’s home in Gorleston and after leaving continued her work as a private nanny for a family.

At the outbreak of the Second World War she moved to Surrey to work in a factory which assembled aircraft, later returning to Norfolk where she worked as a civil servant in the food office in Great Yarmouth.

In 1946 she met her late husband George, and they went on to marry in 1948 at Limpenhoe church and had one son, Trevor. All their married life was spent living in Reedham and May was widowed in 1978.

She has been a staunch member of the church for many years and enjoyed being a part of the Mother’s Union; she is also a long standing member of the Senior Residents Club in the village.

May has three grandchildren.
